The LG Cookie Fresh updates the original Cookie, which we reviewed over a year ago. If you want a touchscreened handset and are strapped for cash, then it might entice at £129.99 (though as ever, shop around. We found it for £109 at Play.com). But at this price you're looking at some compromises both in terms of features, design and build materials, and in the end we think you might do better looking elsewhere.

On the features front, this has the odd distinction of not being 3G-capable. It's quad-band GSM with GPRS and EDGE, and that has an obvious impact on data download speeds over the network. If you think you can shift to Wi-Fi, think again – it's absent. Mobile internet fans steer clear. There's no GPS either, and the camera shoots at just 2MP.

The Cookie Fresh GS290 is a mostly black handset. It has some silver highlights including the front 'multitasking' button beneath the screen and, on some models, the bottom edge is sliver too.

You've got six colour options for the rest of the edging – black, red, blue, pink, light green and silver. Our review sample was the rather dull black, but the others all add a strip of brightness to what is otherwise a bog-standard design.

The Cookie Fresh GS290 is small and light at 108mm tall, 52.9mm wide and 12.5mm thick and it weighs, according to our scales, a mere 92g. So it is very light for the bag, small for the pocket, and neat in the hand.

The obviously plastic build materials are fairly solid. The Cookie Fresh GS290 might not survive a drop from a few stories up, but it ought to manage a tumble or two down stairs at home, or even onto the pavement.

The side-mounted ports, connectors and buttons are pretty much as you would expect. While the bottom is clear of any connectors, there is a welcome 3.5mm headset connector on the top.

The LG GM205 is an awesome music phone. Has every needed feature to make the music experience enjoyable and complete. It gets much better once you use its built-in FM antenna, for listening on the radio. The LG GM205 is an affordable music phone the LG GM205 is a good choice if you enjoy the simple way of technology. This is a perfect phone for all ages.

Some customers across the world still look for phones with big buttons. Whether it is believable or not, it is the fact. The LG GD550 is on the safer side as it has less technical specifications inside it in order to make only few things to function wrongly. It is an old fashioned slider handset with a good measure of metal on the exterior and has a good keyboard. It also has a HTML browser and a stereo FM radio with the RDS support. The handset supports class 10 GPRS with a speed of 32 to 48 kbps, class 10 EDGE with 236.8 kbps speed and 3G with HSDPA of 3.6 Mbps speed networks respectively. It also has the Bluetooth 2.1 with the A2DP technology. The included 900 mAh lithium ion battery provides a life of 320 hours of stand by time and 4 hours of talk time in the 3G networks.

Design

The GD550 Pure measures 105.5 x 51 x 12.4 mm in dimension and weighs around 132 grams. The design of the GD550 Pure is great with a blend of simplicity and maturity. The body is quite imposing but is clean from too much of embellishments. There are not many controls on it and it a good example of a mobile with minimal and traditional design. It has a TFT display that measures 2.4 inches in dimension and has a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels with support to 65 K colors. Though this display does not produce good contrast levels, it offers excellent viewing angles. The handset has good sunlight legibility also.

The large D-pad that is framed with metal is the main control for navigation in the GD550 Pure. There is a huge confirm key at the middle and it has LED backlighting. There are a couple of soft keys in between the display and the D-pad. All the keys are pleasant to press and provide a tactile feedback. The loudspeaker cum earpiece is at the center above the display. The volume rocker, flap covering the micro USB port and the dedicated camera key are on the right side while the Silent/Ring switch is on the left side. The top has the battery cover latch and the power key. The number pad is opened on sliding the handset upwards. The camera lens is at the back side of the handset.

Interface

The GD550 is the first handset to use the Pure user interface. As the name indicates, the interface is straightforward and easy to use. It is highly responsive and snappy. The slider form factor does some contribution to the interface. Once the handset is slide upwards, the main menu is opened while the screen gets locked on sliding the handset down. The lock screen displays the status bar on the top with the date and time line. This screen can customized with clock styles and wallpapers. It also includes dual time zones. It also displays notifications such as missed calls, new messages, etc. the notifications cannot be scrolled and the lock screen has to be removed by sliding the handset up. The main menu opens on sliding the handset and it displays a rotating view of five of the main icons. This occupies the upper half of the screen. They can be scrolled horizontally with the D-pad. The five icons represent the Camera, Calls, Messages, Organizer and More. The lower half of the screen displays the submenus of the selected menu icon. These are vertically scrollable.

Functions and Performance

The GD550 Pure has a phonebook that can store up to 1000 contacts each associated with some fields. It provides problem free and smooth performance in making calls. The in call quality and reception are good on either side. The smart dialing feature is lacking. It can support the SMS, MMS, email and EMS. The message editor is simple with basic looks. Creating an email account is very simple with the device. The image gallery is basic but has nice zooming and panning speeds. The music player supports the filtering of tracks based on categories and can be minimized on the background. It has five presets for the equalizer while it cannot create a new one. The video player is not very impressive with only limited options to delete and send files. The handset packs a 5 megapixel camera equipped with auto focus.

It is capable of capturing images with a resolution of 2560 x 1920 pixels and record videos with a resolution of 720 x 480 pixels and with a frame rate of 30 fps. The interface of the camera seeks some improvement and the image quality is also poor. The images lack details and suffer from over sharpening, noise reduction and aggressive compression. The colors are accurate and lively without any purple fringing. The videos also lack details and suffer from visible compression artifacts. The browser is good and basic with good page rendering. It lacks the Flash support and the small size of the display makes it less impressive.

LG GB102

The LG GB102 is a super-cheap phone for those who just want to make calls and send texts. It's available for free on a £5 per month contract, or for around £20 SIM-free. You can also pick it up on a pay as you go deal for anywhere between £3.95 with Virgin Mobile, and £9.95 with O2. Note that if you opt for Orange's £5.95 pay as you go deal, you'll be able to exploit Orange Wednesdays. This means you can celebrate the middle of the week with half-price cinema tickets and two-for-one pizzas at PizzaExpress.

Dull as ditchwater

The GB102 is as visually exciting as a lump of coal, and its plastic carcass feels cheap. The battery cover may well be formed of the cheapest plastic humankind has ever created, and stroking it results in a strangely unsettling sensation.

Nevertheless, the phone is robust -- we repeatedly sat on it and dropped it from a height during our testing period, without any adverse consequences. Do that to the iPhone 4 and it'll look like the victim of a gangland shooting.

At 45 by 103 by 14mm, the GB102 is slim enough to fit into a trouser pocket without causing a suggestive bulge. Under a cover on the left-hand side of the phone sits a proprietary port for the charging cable and hands-free headset.

The GB102's tiny, 39mm (1.5-inch), colour screen sits above a four-way navigation pad, and two other buttons that are used for navigating the interface, and making and ending calls. The keypad is responsive enough, and its blue backlight will come in useful for texting on a mountaintop during a total solar eclipse.

Interface all in your face

'Attractive' isn't a word that can be used in reference to the GB102's interface. With only six icons in the main menu, however, it's easy to access the handful of basic features on offer, such as the alarm, calendar, calculator and stopwatch.

There's no doubt about it: this is one boring interface

The GB102 lacks features you'll find on only slightly more expensive phones -- no camera, basic Web access or FM radio here.

Muffled voices

The GB102's call quality is acceptable. We found that voices at both ends of the line sounded slightly muffled -- even at the highest volume -- but it's not a serious impediment to holding conversations or making prank calls at the expense of your local bartender.

Texting is straightforward. The T9 predictive text works admirably, and you can easily input unrecognised swear words into the dictionary. If predictive text isn't your bag, you can quckly turn it off.

The phone's battery life is not the best we've seen from a budget mobile, but it beats the pants off any feature-packed smart phone. We got around 6 days of moderate usage out of the phone before the battery was exhausted.

Conclusion

The LG GB102 isn't particularly attractive, but it's cheap and it handles the basics well. Overall, it's a decent option if you're looking for a disposable secondary handset, or just can't be bothered with a more complicated phone. The similarly priced Alcatel OT-222, however, offers longer battery life, better call quality and an FM radio, which means it's still our favourite mega-cheap phone so far.

It's also more square than most smartphones, making it sit comfortably both within your hand and in your pocket. It may be small, but the handset still rocks a 2.4 inch touchscreen complete with on-screen QWERTY keypad.

OS and Interface

The handset comes complete with a Cartoon UI, giving the phone a friendly and entertaining feel from the get go. It may have already tipped its hand, but LG has now just gotten fully official with its latest flagship Android phone, the Optimus Black (previously known as the LG "B"), which packs a 4-inch NOVA display that promises to be both bright (700 nits) and energy efficient. What's more, despite being just 9.2 mm slim (and tapering down to 6 mm), the phone also packs 1,500mAh battery that promises a full day of use, and you'll get a 2 megapixel front-facing camera in addition to another one of unspecified resolution presumably 'round back. According to LG, the phone will ship with Android 2.2 (plus LG's Optimus UI 2.0), but get a Gingerbread update at some point in the future.
