Camera Sensors

In my post about megapixels I had mentioned about sensors. Now I will discuss about the most important hardware related to camera which is its sensor. Sensor is the part which percieves the image. "It converts" light into electrical signals.

WHY IS SENSOR SO IMPORTANT ??

Then why dont mobile companies use bigger sensors???

Simply because mobile needs to be "mobile". Large sensors need more space and mobiles will become thick. However companies target on general consumer mindset and rather than making better sensors opt for more megapixels. Thats why megapixels are not that important.

Here is an example. Sony Ericsson Satio, Samsung Pixon 12 and Nokia n8 are all in the 12mp category. Satio and Pixon12 use 1/2.5 inch sensor while n86 uses 1/1.83 inch sensor. It means the n8's sensor's size is approx. 1.4 times the size of sensor used in Satio. Nokia n86 8mp uses the 1/2.5 inch sensor while SE Vivaz 8mp uses 1/3.2 inch.

SO DONT JUST RUN IN THE MEGAPIXEL RATE. LOOK FOR OTHER THINGS TOO ;-)
