Android vs Symbian : Is the fight worth it

Note : If you are a steroid stimulated geek who is hunting for facts to prove Android or Symbian is better than the another, then stop reading this right now. It is not for you.

Just for fun i googled android vs symbian before writing it and got around 7,720,000 results. So many blogs, forums and websites are fighting over it. But is the fight worth it. I should say no. It is as vague as fighting for "Orange vs Banana" or "Rat vs Pigeon"
A lot of you who are reading this might have read posts and discussions in various blogs and forums. The main facts presented there are

1. "Android" is simpler to use.
2. "Android" is faster to work than Symbian. Just tap and go.
3. "Symbian" has a lot of bugs.
Conclusion : "Symbian" is outdated.

Now consider the following facts :

1. "Banana" is simpler to eat.
2. "Bananas" can be eaten faster than "Oranges". Just peel and go.
3. "Oranges" have many seeds.
Conclusion : "Oranges" are outdated.

Not convinced?... Have some more.

"High end Droids have 1Ghz processor and can even be overclocked. Symbian is still running 680Mhz. Android is better"

can be compared to

"Birds can rotate their head to 360 degrees. Humans can only do a 180 degree turn. Birds are better than humans.". Caution : Overclocking can be fatal.

You may prefer eating an orange or a banana. Similarly it depends on your personal choice to use Android or Symbian. Why are we bashing an OS just because we prefer to use another? How can Symbian^3 be outdated when Android releases a new version? You wont call windows 7 outdated just because Linux has a newer version. Both Android and Symbian offer different types of UI. They are not comparable. I feel easy in using Symbian (and eating oranges). You may be happy with Android (and bananas). Both have their own merits and demerits.

And if you are a fanboy who still feels

"Android is better than Symbian as it offers better internet browsing and Symbian is indeed outdated"

then go on and enjoy it. Imagine you have a Ferrari. You wont go telling every Ford owner that your car is better than his.
But you are you telling this because both Android and Symbian have some unique features. Nothing can satisfy lust. . . if its about technology

I have been playing with the latest version of Swype on my N8 from Ovi Store for the past 24 hours and to tell the truth, its a great experience.

N8 is my first touchscreen device, so I had no idea about what a good qwerty keyboard means. I had read in many forums that the Swype keyboard is better than the keyboard whick comes 'built in' with N8. So I decided to give it a go. And my goodness its superb. Swiping is a lot more easy that typing. You just need some practice. I can now write 20 words per minute with just a day of practice.

Why Symbian is safe!!

Symbian is not Fragmented but Android is:

What fragmentation means:

In software terms fragmentation means growing in parts very rapidly, so there are large number of software version exist with the original version because of this the application built for one version might not work on other version(unlike Symbian).

Prospective problems:

The lack of consistency makes it difficult to build an application which integrate properly in all devices of different version of OS. For example: application designed for specific screen resolution, input methods, form factor might not be compatible with other devices which has different characteristics.

If you bought a device running android OS (Newer or Old), there is no gurantee that all the application or games available in android market will run on it. Every mobile manufacturer change the UI, API's & add new functionalities to attract customers. For Example: Angry birds work on Galaxy S(Android 2.2 Froyo) but the same not work on HTC wildfire(Android 2.2 Froyo) But it works on N8, C7, C6-01 and will work on the upcoming E7.

Because of this one more major problem is there is no gurantee that devices with earlier version of android will not be upgraded to latest version.

Mega Shootout : N8 vs Optimus2X

Around 5 months after the launch of N8 LG have come out with a competitor.
An year ago android phones brought a new feature to phone - HD video recording. From then almost all high end androids started boasting of 720p @ 30fps. When N8 was announced it was critisized because of low frame rate (25fps) but it silenced the critics with its launch. The large sensor coupled with Carl Zeiss lenses not only captured extremely fine images but also record crystal clear videos.

Now LG Optimus2X boasts of 1080p video. Sounds awesome  but is it worth it?

Size of Updates

If you ever noticed the firmware size appears different when we try to download the same from Mobile & from PC or Ovi Suite, the reason for the same is mentioned below:

PC or Ovi Suite download and apply the entire image, while device software insert just the "blocks" that have changed into the firmware already stored in the phone.

So, in future if you ever noticed the same you already know the answer.

N9 is cancelled says Eldar Murtazin;

Eldar Murtazin, Editor- in-Chief of Mobile Review has said via twitter that N9 has been cancelled.

However he also confirmed that a new phone is in development. This news has created a wave of surprise amongst thousands of Nokia fans around the world. N9 was supposedly the first device to run Meego with an impressive 1.2Ghz Intel Moorestown processor.

There is no official statement by Nokia regarding this tweet. Nokia had confirmed the presence of N9 over an year ago. However no specs were shared at that time.

Eldar has been a promising source of leaked handsets for quite some time so this news cant be flagged off as a rumour. However it can be his attempt to disregard Nokia keeping in mind the clash between the two regarding N8.

Symbian^4 ain't going to come

This is an old news. But I was ignorant about it till today. On 20th October 2010 Rich Green, Nokia CTO, announced that

you can buy a Nokia smartphone confident that any improvements introduced later to the Symbian platform, such as the user interface, can be made available to download on your device as well. No need to wait for Symbian^4 — the improvements we were planning for Symbian^4 will be introduced as and when they become available. In fact, we will no longer be talking about Symbian^3 or Symbian^4 at all – it will be one constantly evolving and constantly improving platform.

One benefit of this simplified approach is that planned and future improvements in Symbian will be developed in Qt and will be compatible with the existing Symbian^3 platform release. This means that Nokia's continued commitment to develop the Symbian platform will benefit not only future users of Symbian-based products, but will result in updates and upgrades for existing Symbian^3 users. The resulting change to a model of continuous evolution replaces the previous release-based model. Nokia will no longer refer to Symbian^3 or Symbian^4. The benefit to consumers will be a constant improvement in the experience of their Symbian-based Nokia products.

My reaction : I was informed about this fact by Nirave from nokiausers. I googled and got this info. I remember I was busy with exams in October 2010 hence missed this piece of news. When i started reading Mr. Green's statement, I was so upset that I titled this post as "Symbian is dead". Also thought of closing this blog (as I dont want a blog on something which is going to die). But them I read this

it will be one constantly evolving and constantly improving platform.

So Nokia isnt going to ditch symbian. Its going to stick to it. This is a very good news as it means that N8 will be the best Symbian device in future too :-)

Error messages on Symbian - analyzed

Why people love Android is because of its simplicity. Symbian interface seems made for geeks and can look very complicated at times. Nokia have tried out their best in making Symbian^3 user friendly. But nothing is perfect... I cut my 'geeko-philosophical' thoughts here and present you some error messages you may experience on your nokia and their explanation.

1. Certificate error. Contact the application supplier :You may have tried installing unsigned application.
Signing is mandatory Symbian.
You can use self-signed certificate or developer certificate from Symbian Signed or OPDA to sign your application.

2. Unable to install. Constrained by the certificate : This message appears when you attempt to install developer certificate
in unsupported device. Dev certificates from are IMEI specific.

3. Require application access not granted : With self-signed certificate, you can only sign basic set capabilities, i.e. Network Services , Read User Data, Write User Data , Local Services and User Environment . If you self sign an application that requires one of the extended capabilities (example SwEvent) you cannot sign it with self-signed certificate. In this case, apply for developer certificates from OPDA

4. Unable to install a protected application from an
untrusted supplier : It is because application requires access to protected UID.
Solution : If you get this message it means you need to hack your phone to install it. But I strongly recommend not to hack.

5. Unable to install : This message may come up when your installation file
copies files to other application's private folder.
Solution : Hack your phone.

6. Expired Certificate : Certificates are valid for only a limited period. Installing an app signed with an old certificate can give this error. Solution : Set the date to 1-2 year prior than the current date.

7. Online certificate check failed : May be due to internet problem.
Solution : In Application Manager->Options->Settings Change Online certificate check to Off.

8. Application is not compatible with phone. Continue Anyway? : The application was made for S^1.
Solution : Do not install. Search for version compatible with your phone.

9. "General: Memory Full.
Close some applications and try
again" : RAM is full.
Solution : Close some apps. Or restart phone.

10. "General: System Error" : It may be due to a variety of known causes.

Nokia N9 gets rumoured again

Nokia's Meego platform based smartphone N9 is in rumours again.

According to leaked code N9 will feature Intel Atom processor clocked at 1.2Ghz. However it seems that processor is actually Intel Moorestown which has been designed for Meego smartphones and is Intel Atom based with 50x reduction in power consumption.

Maximum clock speed is 1.5Ghz. It will support 3D graphics, 1080p video decoding, 720p video recording and multi point video conferencing.

Camera will be the same as that on N8 - 12 mp with Xenon.

It is rumoured that N9 will support 4G. This seems highly improbable because majority of Nokia's market share is in Asian countries and no Asian networks provide 4G.
