The latest symbian^3 devices have in built GPS and AGPS. There are around 10 apps that make use of these features. However two of these really stand out of the crowd. First of them is the Ovi Maps. The latest version of Ovi Maps for Symbian^3 is very fast in locking your GPS position. It offers rich features such as voice guided navigation, 2D and 3D view and map/terrain/satellite view to name a few.
Voice navigation is present on android and ios also. But Nokia is smarter to include the fm transmitter with which you can hear navigation instructions on your car's fm stereo system. This is very useful as phone's speakers are not loud enough to make the navigation instructions clearly audible in heavy traffic. Also this app is absolutely free and can work on GPS alone. So you wont get lost if network reception is weak.
For newbies GPS is a 'chip' that communicates with satellites to locate your phone's position accurately upto 1 m. However GPS may not be able to work inside buildings or in clowdy conditions. That is when AGPS comes into play. AGPS gathers your location info from your phone's network. It uses GPRS/3G to do so.
Another app which is very good is Google latitude. It can be downloaded for free from latitude.google.com.
Its only drawback is that it cant function without GPRS or 3G. In OVI maps you can download the maps for a region and can then navigate offline. Also latitude doesn't offer voice navigation. However I prefer google latitude over OVI maps as it synces with my google account and I am also able to see the location of my friends using this app.
